A Rainy Day with The Rejeks

December 2009  |  Published in Interviews

The first time we heard about The Rejeks, it was via MySpace and their song made it to our Pick of The Month. We listen to Sincerity Love over and over again and came to the conclusion: we dig their sound and they seem like fun. Simple pimple.

Don’t let their shy exterior fool you. Boys will be boys. The Rejeks may appear to be the boys next door. The kind your mum talks about but no. They’re like the rest of them. Just want to play music and lepak bawah kolong block (chill at the void deck). Not that it’s a bad thing.

We sat down with The Rejeks on Friday the 13th. Nothing unlucky about that. If you exclude the sudden downpour that greeted us when we made our way to Orchard. Many thanks to the boys for coming out to chat with us.

Minus the glasses and their mop of curls – the boys just want to play music. So, stop starring at their hair. Don’t worry guys, we think curls are cool. Actually, we’ve been trying to perm our hair for ages. Don’t think its happening.

Here goes.

kittystarr: Introduce yourselves please. Don’t forget to include your specialty if you have any.

:sniggers: Hi, I’m Amalu, I play drums with my mouth open.
I’m Fareez, I play bass and also the vox. I like to bake.
I’m Haqim. I play guitar. I have no other interest. Except photography.

The band: We don’t have any talents ah. We just play music.

kittystarr: Tell us the history of The Rejeks

We’re Secondary school friends. We started out playing for school functions and after that, we decided to take things seriously.

At the beginning, we had more band members. Started out with four and it went up to six people in the band. But the numbers start decreasing and we’re left with the three of us.

kittystarr: Why The Rejeks?

A: We came up with a couple of names actually.
F: We were on MSN one night. Sort of brainstorming for band names and we came up with The Rejeks!

Also, cause we don’t have any luck with girls. Besides, it looks and sounds nice.

kittystarr: How would you describe your sound.. In five words?

Pop. Dance. Psychedelic. Disco. Rock mesti ada (must have).

kittystarr: What are you guys doing if you’re not being a Rejek?

A: Full-time student
H: I just finished my O Levels
F: I work at a bakery. I love to bake!

We like to hangout and talk nonsense.

kittystarr: Complete this sentence. When I grow up, I want to be a..?

F: Baker.
A: I don’t know. :starts to ponder: I don’t know yet. Still thinking.
H: I want to still play music with The Rejeks. Maybe become a plumber?

kittystarr: Any upcoming events we can look forward to?

H: We have a couple of gigs lined up.

We’re working on an EP, if we have the money. We need to save up first. We also want to tour Malaysia. If possible. All this need money, y’know!

F: New band member? Maybe.. We never know.

kittystarr: What’s the fun thing about being in The Rejeks?

A: We have fun! We do. And we’re best friends!
F: We don’t take things seriously.
H: We get to express ourselves with music.

kittystarr: What’s the not-so-fun thing about being in The Rejeks?

H: We no money!
F: We know each other too well. Might be a problem, at times. Think we need to socialize with people from other bands.
H: Also, people keep staring at our curly hair! We all wear specs but different body size!

kittystarr: Any messages to your followers and SoundSGood readers?

F: To SoundSGood, thank you for this. Keep doing what you’re doing.
H: Keep believing!
A: Support local scene.

Support local music, support Rejek!
